I Leveraged Outside Expertise to Compound My Leadership Growth

PEERNACLE STORIES

Jaret Mutter

CEO, Valley Wealth Group

“As peers, we do a good job of holding one another accountable, and that’s helping me to actually apply what I learn.”

As the founder and CEO of Roanoke-based Valley Wealth Group, Jaret Mutter was used to having the weight of every decision rest solely on his shoulders.

He had built a highly skilled and motivated team of investment professionals, but he didn’t have many outlets to discuss sensitive leadership issues in a trusted environment.

Being part of the Peernacle CEO peer group has given Jaret diverse perspectives to think more strategically about his business.

“The discipline of disconnecting for a day each month to focus on my business rather than staying swamped in my business has been huge,” Jaret explained.

Jaret is quick to point out that he has gained insights from industry conferences. But he appreciates that his local peer group, which is comprised of non-competing members, provides a safe space to be vulnerable and open up about the challenges of being a CEO.

There are a lot of really smart people here willing to share best practices,” Jaret said. “As peers, we do a good job of holding one another accountable, and that’s helping me to actually apply what I learn.”

The monthly speakers have also been a bonus to Jaret as they have helped him to see his business and his leadership style through others’ eyes. This is enabling him to lead and communicate more effectively.

Initially hesitant about making time for a peer group, Jaret now highly recommends it.

To be honest, I had low expectations, initially. But it has been absolutely worth it. The fresh perspectives are invaluable if you want to grow as a leader.

For Jaret, the Peernacle CEO peer group delivered the outside insight, accountability, and diversity of thought he sought to gain confidence as a leader and take Valley Wealth Group to new heights.
